The all-new Maruti Suzuki Grand Vitara is a five-seat compact SUV that measures more than four metres, making it 4345mm in length. Apart from that, the 2022 iteration of the Grand Vitara is undoubtedly a head-turner. Moreover, it is also called the Toyota Urban Cruiser Hyryder. And as for the Hyryder, its starting price is marginally higher than the Maruti Suzuki Grand Vitara’s price, making a difference of nearly Rs 5,000.
And if you ask about its predecessor, it was the Maruti Suzuki S-Cross. Yes, you read it right. It’s not the successor of the outgoing Vitara. It may be a cousin of the Vitara, but it’s not its heir.
However, keeping that aside, the new Grand Vitara looks sophisticated from the outside. Overall, this new SUV has an elevated sense of design. Moreover, this indigenously produced vehicle has both mild and strong-hybrid engines. The Grand Vitara’s specifications are the same as the Hyryder’s. The mild-hybrid unit is Maruti-Suzuki-made, while the strong-hybrid engine is Toyota’s. Now, customers can also choose the type of drivetrain between front-wheel drive and all-wheel drive (called “AllGrip” in Maruti’s lingo).
In parallel, this new SUV might also set a benchmark, like other Maruti Suzuki cars in India.
So, if you are planning to buy this five-seater SUV, then below are a few things that you should know:
Specifications
As previously mentioned, the new Maruti Suzuki Grand Vitara’s specifications include mild and strong-hybrid engines. Both are 1.5-litre petrol-powered units. The mild-hybrid mill is Maruti-sourced, while the strong-hybrid mill is Toyota-sourced. The former produces 102bhp and 137Nm of torque, paired with a standard five-speed manual transmission and an optional six-speed torque converter automatic gearbox. However, the all-wheel-drive option is exclusive to Maruti’s mild-hybrid with manual variants only.
On the other hand, the strong-hybrid engine, known as the “Intelligent Electric Hybrid System,” churns out 91bhp and 122Nm of torque from the ICE unit, returning a combined output of 114bhp and 141Nm of torque. This variant gets an exclusive transmission, the e-CVT. Check out the Grand Vitara review on the autoX website to learn about the driveability of this compact SUV.
As far as fuel economy is concerned, the 2022 Vitara’s mileage ranges between 20.58kmpl and 27.97kmpl (ARAI-claimed). Please note that these are indicative figures. The real-world mileage of the vehicle varies with local traffic conditions and driving style.
Apart from powertrains, the brakes are taken care of by front ventilated and rear solid discs. Brake discs are standard across the variants. Then on the corners of the car, the front suspension is a MacPherson strut, and the rear suspension boasts torsion beams for better absorption over the potholes. Maruti cars are known for having a soft suspension setup, which leads to a comfortable ride. However, at the same time, their vehicles are also known for being fuel-efficient.
Similarly, Indian buyers also want good build quality along with the comfort and mileage of Maruti cars. But the safety ratings of their products aren’t impressive. This time, the new Maruti Suzuki Grand Vitara might receive a good safety rating from the NCAP.
The Appearance
The designers of the Grand Vitara made the car stand out from the rest of the Maruti Suzuki cars in India. At first glance, you won’t be able to associate this SUV with Maruti Suzuki. As previously mentioned, they have given a premium look to the car. The new hexagonal mesh grille, surrounded by chrome and flanked by split LED headlights, makes the front fascia eye-catching. At the same time, its upright position and bold front end with sharp cuts on the bumper make the car look more aggressive. Please note that the mentioned exterior features and garnishes belong to the top-of-the-line variant of the Grand Vitara.
As for the side profile, the lifted body of the vehicle gives a lot of space between the wheel and the wheel arch, which ends up giving a ground clearance of 210mm.
However, the side silhouette of the Grand Vitara is identical to that of its step-cousin, the Toyota Urban Cruiser Hyryder. The Grand Vitara’s exterior also features black cladding that runs throughout the lower section of the vehicle’s body.
On the other hand, the rear end of the Vitara features a horizontally running LED taillight, which includes three LED square-shaped lights on one side. Above it, the car has a rear wiper, followed by an integrated rear spoiler on the roof for improved aerodynamics.
Moreover, the lower section of the rear bumper features vertically positioned lights (indicator, reverse, and brake) on both ends.
Variants and Price
The carmaker sells the Grand Vitara in six trims: Sigma, Delta, Zeta, Zeta+, Alpha, and Alpha+. It is worth noting that the strong-hybrid variants are exclusive to the Plus (+) trims. Further, these trims make up a total of fifteen variants.
The Grand Vitara’s price starts at Rs 10.45 lakh for the base model, the Sigma Petrol MT, and goes up to Rs 19.65 lakh for the top-most model, the Alpha Plus Hybrid CVT DT. All are ex-showroom prices, New Delhi, as of November 2022.
These price figures are also subject to change without prior notice to the customers.
