For decades, people dressed as vampires, zombie nurses, or lumberjacks with axes through their heads. However, the introduction of social media has increased the number of Halloween dresses and costume options.
True-blue Halloween aficionados, who want to put together the most current and niche outfits to wow friends, are influenced by memes, tweets, Marvel characters, and important celebrity stories of the year. More crucially, with which to dazzle social media.
“One of the reasons Halloween is so fun is because you can dress up and show off in ways you wouldn’t normally do,” explains Andy, a clinical psychologist at Clinic for mental healthcare. “You might be someone completely different and have a very different personality. You can wear a great costume when trick-or-treating with your kids or at a party. The nicest part is that you receive candy.”
The days of Halloween being viewed as a night for children are long gone, and adults are likely to spend more time putting together their own appearances than their children’s. Family-themed costumes, on the other hand, are quite popular, with parents dressing their families as a subliminal expression of how they want the world to perceive them.
According to Christine Andy, “families may gravitate toward themed costumes that express their values and attributes.” “The costumes that parents choose for their children may project how they want them to appear in real life.” They may choose characteristics for themselves and their children who are courageous, strong, intellectual, kind, and so on because they, too, want to be viewed as such in their various communities.”
Whether you mask-up or meme-ify yourself, the reason for your costume this year could be frighteningly accurate.
Why Bother Dressing Up?
Adults bear a great deal of responsibilities on a daily basis. “Halloween is a day when job, home, children, and bills can all be postponed,” Andy explains. “This is a moment for people to play a role other than themselves; we can change our reality for at least a day.”
Costumes on All Hallows’ Eve, the night when our forefathers thought the spirits of the dead roamed the Earth, have been worn for almost 2,000 years. Trick-or-treating door-to-door is considered to have originated around the 15th century as a practise known as mumming or guising. The practise permitted individuals to imitate spirits in order to receive offerings while also hiding from the spirits in order to protect themselves.
“Dress-up allows adults to play as well,” explains Andy. “Through dress-up, adults are able to access different parts of themselves and their creative sides.” It also allows adults to reconnect with their inner kid and reconnect with the part of them that still wants to play, have fun, let their hair down, and be carefree. Halloween, in general, expands people’s imaginations through role-playing, innovative attire, and a variety of identities.”
What Your Dress Choice Reveals About You
Whether you’re grabbing an old favourite from the dress-up box or planning a costume for a month, what you wear on the spookiest night of the year can reveal a lot about who you are.
“Scary and frightening costumes are generally chosen by those who want to break social conventions and stand out in a sea of conformity,” says Dr. “Sexy costumes are for persons who want to show off their inner seductiveness and exhibit their inner prowess.” People that dress up like superheroes may be doing it to feel like a superhero.”
Indeed, dressing up as someone or something completely different for the evening is part of the pleasure. Psychologists refer to a phenomena known as enclothed cognition, which demonstrates that the clothing we wear can affect and influence our psychological state. It describes the bright, lavish costumes that many artists wear on stage, as well as concepts like power dressing, which is used in the workplace to appear powerful or authoritative.
“Our Halloween costumes reveal more about our personalities than we may realise,” adds Andy. “The style of costume you choose may be related to a variety of factors, such as a desire to explore features that aren’t very evident inside oneself, or an attempt to reflect a part of yourself that you typically suppress.”
“Those that dress in ‘strong’ costumes may be more confident, assertive, bold, and domineering in their daily lives.” Others, on the other hand, may do the same because they are frightened individuals who struggle to take risks and lack assertiveness skills.”
“Dressing up as a superstar or a pop singer is a chance to live a fantasy life for one day,” Andy explains.
