Everest Base Camp Trek
The Everest Base Camp Trek is a high altitude trek in Nepal, which is considered to be one of the most popular treks in the world. The trek starts from Lukla and ends at Everest Base Camp, which is located at an elevation of 5,364 meters above sea level. It covers approximately 12 kilometers and takes about 8 days to complete. The route passes through some remote villages and offers stunning views of mountains as well as valleys below it. The trek will take you to the village of Phakding and to Everest Base Camp, which lies just above the village. The trek is considered to be easier than the Everest Base Camp Trek, but still requires physical fitness, stamina and a good pair of boots.
It was first undertaken by British mountaineers George Mallory, Sandy Irvine, and Andrew Irvine (the son) in 1922 during their attempt on Mount Everest.
The Great Barrier Reef
The Great Barrier Reefs are currently threatened by climate change and pollution from industrial fishing practices. These practices have damaged the health of coral reefs around the world and led to mass coral bleaching events which kill off coral polyps when they expel their symbiotic algae cells that provide them with food and color. In addition, warming ocean temperatures cause coral bleaching to occur more frequently in warmer months and shifting water temperature is also a risk factor.
A 2016 study by the Australian Institute of Marine Science found that global warming had already caused 66% of reefs around Australia to bleach and if nothing is done, 98% could be destroyed by 2040.The Great Barrier Reefs are protected by the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Authority, who monitor for threats and take action to protect the coral.
The Grand Canyon
The Grand Canyon is a large canyon located in northern Arizona in the United States. The canyon is about 277 miles long, up to 18 miles wide, and attains a depth of over 5 miles at some points. The canyon was created by the Colorado River flowing through a series of plateaus with layers of rock from the surrounding cliffs to erosion over millions of years.
The words “Grand Canyon” can refer either to the Grand Canyon itself or to the Colorado River. The Grand Canyon, often shortened to “the Canyon”, is considered one of the Seven Natural Wonders of the World and is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
The Amazon River
The Amazon River is a river in South America, which provides about 20% of the planet’s freshwater. The Amazon River basin is home to more than 3 million people and covers almost 3 million square kilometers.
It was not always known as such. It was first called Rio Santa Maria de la Mar Dulce by Spanish explorers who believed that they had found a sea route to India when they reached its mouth in 1541. They named it after Saint Mary, who they believed would protect them on their voyage.
